The challenge

Inclusive, entrepreneurial and transformational, Aston University is a leading university of science, technology and enterprise. The organisation required project management support to implement a strategy management system as part of a delivering its new seven-year strategy, “Aston 2030”.

The project included the roll-out of a strategic dashboard, complete with a suite of measures of success, and the introduction of a strategy review process informed by real-time, good quality data.

As part of a broader transformation agenda, this complex and time critical initiative required us to skilfully manage multiple stakeholders and project areas including data definition and collection, and project reporting.

Our approach

Our team of experts supported a number of project components to implement the strategy management system.

We engaged with Aston University’s leaders to understand the availability of data sources. Following this we captured relevant available data to feed into the dashboard. Corresponding governance and processes were refined to mobilise delivery of the strategy.

Our team also implemented an ‘action ownership model’. This allows for progression and increased transparency around accountability for specific areas of the wider seven-year strategy.

With every measure of success having unique outputs, the team developed a comprehensive roadmap alongside the dashboard. Along with the design of further process maps, this helped to identify gaps and challenge existing ways of working. Similarly it further developed potential across the strategy and future proofed the new measures to ensure continuous improvement.

To achieve long-term success, our team designed a pack of templates to be used by strategy owners. This will support performance reviews and further target setting.

By defining new processes and ways of working, our project management support has assisted Aston University to develop the approach for managing the delivery of the 2030 strategy and the ambitions therein.
