Chris Poynton

Programme, project management and coordination

I lead projects by keeping teams aligned, progress on track, and momentum strong. With a background in teaching, I bring clear communication, organisation, and people skills to complex delivery. I thrive in collaborative environments, stay calm under pressure, and enjoy turning challenges into solutions. Passionate about change, I love helping teams succeed and grow together.

Chris says

"With clear communication skills and an approachable personality, I'm able to build strong relationships and bring teams together.”

My role

In my role, I focus on leading teams to drive and track progress, ensuring projects run smoothly and stay on course. This involves coordinating delivery, keeping track of multiple moving parts, and applying project management skills to maintain momentum and achieve successful outcomes.

Skills and experience

I am a strong communicator and natural people person who enjoys building positive relationships across teams and stakeholders. My teaching background has equipped me with the ability to break down complex information and present it in a clear, engaging way.

I’m also proficient in Agile delivery and Azure DevOps, with hands-on experience in managing defect resolution and ensuring effective task delivery.

Career highlights

Having successfully transitioned from a career in teaching to project delivery, I bring transferable skills in communication, organisation, and stakeholder engagement. These strengths have enabled me to lead cross-team collaboration on large-scale change initiatives.

A key highlight was playing a central role in the successful delivery of a complex housing system implementation at Sheffield City Council. I led and coordinated multiple workstreams across the reset, build, and testing phases, ensuring alignment between technical and operational stakeholders.

In the lead-up to go-live, I managed the end-to-end cutover plan, overseeing readiness activities and transition governance to enable a controlled and seamless deployment into the live environment.

What characteristics do you think makes you good at your role?

I’m organised, adaptable and calm under pressure, always approaching challenges with a practical, solution-focused mindset. My natural curiosity and eagerness to learn help me quickly get to grips with new systems and processes.

Thriving in collaborative environments, my clear communication and approachability enable me to build strong relationships and bring teams together to work effectively.

What I love
about my job

The role of a change consultant ensures that every day is different, purposeful and rewarding. I’m passionate about learning and love how the role enables development, whilst fostering an environment where personal skills and qualities are celebrated. Working alongside people who take pride in their work, and for an organisation that instils confidence in its employees, is inspiring and motivating.

How do you relax away from work?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and challenging myself, which keeps me motivated and constantly growing. I also love cooking and sharing meals with friends, as well as trying new restaurants, bars and exploring new places with my partner and our border collie, Tess. I’m an avid podcast listener and a huge sports fan, supporting Leicester Tigers and Huddersfield Town.

What words of wisdom would you give your younger self?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, as they are essential for learning and building resilience. Growth only happens in the most challenging moments, whether physically, mentally and professionally.

Try not to overthink every decision; things are rarely as bad as they seem. Always trust the process, there’s no point in trying to run before you can walk!

Pet hate

My biggest pet hate is when people say they will do something by don’t follow through, as it creates frustration, wastes time, and lets the team down. Reliability and keeping promises matter to me because they build trust and keep projects on track. Actions always speak louder than words.

Five dream dinner guests

  • Tom Hardy: probably my favourite actor – he was brilliant in the series Mobland and Peaky Blinders
  • Peter Kay: his Bolton Albert Hall stand-up was my first introduction to comedy, and his relatable northern humour makes him the very best in my opinion
  • Martin Johnson: 2003 England Rugby World Cup winning captain. Absolute legend of the game and cult hero of my team Leicester Tigers
  • Adele: incredible singer with an amazing personality. Definitely the most relatable celebrity I would say
  • Kelly Reilly: the actress who played Beth Dutton in Yellowstone- what a series and what a performance from her!

If you had to take one book, one film and one CD on a desert island, what would they be?

  • Book: Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
  • Film: Saving Private Ryan. That said, I wouldn’t call myself a big film buff – I much prefer a TV series. If I had to choose, it would be Yellowstone, Game of Thrones or Top Boy (I couldn’t choose just one – they cover all genres)
  • Album: Red Hot Chilli Peppers – By the Way

One thing no one would know about you

After university, I spent a year living and working in Australia, an incredible experience that taught me to be independent pretty quickly. Whilst based there, I also explored much of South East Asia, gaining insight into different cultures and ways of life. That time abroad taught me the value of embracing new challenges and continues to influence my personal and professional life today.

Last supper choice

  • Starter: calamari and garlic aioli dip
  • Main: fillet steak (medium rare), chunky chips, pepper corn sauce, onion rings, grilled tomato and a large glass of Argentinian Malbec
  • Dessert: homemade sticky toffee pudding with custard
